LAPD Rampart Division Jeopardy

JUST THE FACTS...

As of December 1998 there were over four hundred (400) known gangs in the City of Los Angeles. Membership now totals sixty-five thousand (65,000) active participants.

  • 90% will be arrested by age 18
  • 75% will be arrested twice by age 18
  • 95% will not finish high school
  • 60% will be dead or in prison by age 20

THE SOLUTION...

Jeopardy is a gang prevention/intervention program designed for boys and girls ages eight (8) through seventeen (17). Jeopardy uses a positive approach designed to change the attitude and behavior of the children in our community. The steps to this program include:

  • Identify the children that need help
  • Notify their parents and hold a family interview
  • Families are referred to local community counseling agencies
  • Daily parenting classes are provided
  • Alternative activities are offered and selected by each child
  • The children are monitored weekly for at least one year

The Jeopardy program combines the strength of the community, schools and the police department in making positive, lifelong attitude changes in the young people living in our area. These changes, we believe, will result in a more positive self-concept for youth as well as having a positive impact on the community.

THE MISSION...

To provide "at risk" youth the opportunity to develop self-esteem, respect, discipline and goal setting skills. We seek to offer our participants the opportunity to belong, to learn and to pass on their knowledge in a supportive, positive and caring environment.
